In spite of fierce competition with condensing combi-boilers, heat pumps are beginning to gain ground in the Netherlands. The Dutch Heat Pump Association (DHPA) recently declared its objective of having half a million heat pumps running by 2020. The total number in operation at the end of 2010 was 120,000. New construction has been the main market up to now but the emphasis is shifting to renovation which offers more potential particularly for group housing projects where existing gas boilers can be replaced by gasfired absorption units.
