Ducted air conditioners such as chillers had been dominating the Indian market. However, through the efforts of Japanese manufacturers, market recognition of VRF technology has improved greatly.
VRF demand in India was estimated at 34,000 units in 2016, showing 10.4% year-on-year growth. Compared with the past two years, growth of the Indian VRF market tends to be flat.

VRF took a large share of commercial projects in India. With India’s continuous economic growth, large project constructions such as shopping malls are likely to continue, generating demand for hundreds of VRF units in the future.

Demand for mini-VRF systems has also increased. In particular, mini-VRFs with a capacity of 8-12 hp designed for housing complexes is growing. Mini-VRF products are sold mostly in urban areas including Mumbai and are installed in small-sized apartments. As cities in India grow, the mini-VRF segment is securing a greater market share and now accounts for about 20% of the total VRF market, up from 10%. LG produces mini-VRF systems locally.
