Increases in Data Traffic Volume and Contributing Factors
2017/06/22
Formerly, computer-aided data processing had been performed mainly to improve efficiency in corporate accounting and to streamline corporate operations. Up to now, data communications for these purposes have mainly taken place between groups in the same company or between companies with a business relationship in order to share and mutually use the information. In recent years, however, with the advent of the information age and faster and more sophisticated data processing and communications networks, it has become common for not just for companies but also for individuals to handle and communicate large volumes of data in daily life.

According to the U.S. research company International Data Corporation (IDC), the world’s data traffic volume amounted to 1.8 zettabytes (ZB), or 1.8 trillion gigabytes (GB), in 2011 and is predicted to reach 40 ZB (40 trillion GB) in 2020. Behind the skyrocketing increase in data traffic is the rapid rise of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets as well as personal computers connected to the Internet, and the spread of high-speed, large-volume data traffic over these devices. This trend is predicted to accelerate, reflecting the growing availability of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing.
