3. 2 EUROPEAN HEAT PUMP PRESS REVIEW
2017/07/15
Compiled by Susan Phalippou, JARN’s France Correspondent
Western Europe dominates the global heat pump market and is estimated to have accounted for a 40.7% value share in 2016.

In Europe, two major issues are driving the expansion of the heat pump market: stringent regulations governing refrigerants and energy efficiency. Lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants are replacing hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants at an unprecedented rate. Heat pumps operating on CO2 or ammonia have been attracting a lot of attention in recent years. On a global scale, the CO2-based heat pump segment is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2% over the period spanning 2016 to 2026, and growth is expected to be higher than this figure in Europe. The high efficiency of CO2 refrigerant in residential applications, along with its environmentally friendly nature, has given rise to a high acceptance rate in Europe.
