The U.S. commercial refrigeration equipment market in 2016 showed slower growth than during the period spanning 2010 to 2015. Affected by the R22 phasedown aiming at a ban on the manufacture or import of virgin R22 from January 1, 2020, and energy efficiency standards, the U.S. refrigeration equipment market is turning upward slowly, centering on low-GWP refrigerants and energy saving features.

An estimated market share by product type in 2016 showed that refrigerated transport accounts for 30%, refrigerators and freezers for 27%, beverage refrigeration equipment for 15%, refrigerated display cases for 19%, ice machines for 6%, and refrigerated vending machines for 3%.

The U.S. refrigeration market is led by the food service industry, with a 30% market share of food service-related equipment. In the food service industry, a new form of restaurants called ‘fast casual’, an intermediate concept between fast food and casual dining, is growing considerably, and is driving the industry’s momentum.
