The mainstream products in the U.S. air conditioner market are ducted unitary systems and window units. In recent years, there has been particularly strong demand for residential and commercial-use ductless split-type air conditioners, locally called mini-splits, with heat pump and inverter technologies and lower prices. Subsidies for heat pump heating provided by electric power companies have also benefited from a tailwind. Multi-split systems are often used for housing.
