* ATW market in Germany
The German heating market has traditionally been a combustion boiler market. Heat pumps have gradually gained awareness, however, and the heat pump market led by ground-source heat pumps has established itself. The market is challenging for Japanese manufacturers to break into, so many are attempting to expand demand for ATW heat pumps through alliances with and acquisitions of local heating equipment manufacturers. As a result, ATW demand has grown in recent years and follows France as the second largest in Europe. Germany’s ATW market scale was about 45,000 units in 2013.

Their market shares are even higher in the telecom and financial industries. Local brands, including Gree, Midea and Haier, have been penetrating the data center air conditioning sector during the recent years. With advantages in prices, sales channels and services, they have brought increasing pressure to foreign brands. Especially in government procurement projects, the domestic brands have become the frequent winners of public data center air conditioning projects.

5. Daikin Transfers AC Production Back to Japan
On July 16, Daikin announced that the company had transferred a part of production of small, commercial-use air conditioners for the Japanese market that had been transferred to China back to Shiga Plant (Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture). By accelerating production transfers back to Japan, Daikin intends to reduce exchange rate fluctuation risks and shorten lead-times. Daikin plans to produce 5,850,000 units of residential air conditioners globally in 2014, up from 5,200,000 units in 2013. Of this total, the company set its domestic production target for the Japanese market at 1,600,000 units, down 100,000 units from the previous year, taking into consideration a decrease in demand after Japan’s consumption tax increase in April 2014.
