1. Sizzling Heat Wave Has Little Impact on Global AC Demand
-- Review of the Global AC Market in the First Half of 2019--
In the first half of 2019, the hot summer arrived late in Europe and Southeast Asia. However, the intense heat did not have the power to boost the global room air conditioner (RAC) market. JARN estimates that the global RAC market decreased by 0.8% compared with the same period of last year, recording negative growth for the first time in a while.

2. Europe
In 2019, summer arrived late in Europe. In the southern parts of Italy and Spain in particular, the temperatures did not rise evenly at the beginning of summer. Then starting at the end of June, many regions were hit by intense heat, and demand for RACs has increased rapidly. JARN estimates that the European RAC market in the first half of 2019 expanded by 9.8%.

3. The United States
Mini-splits
The size of the U.S. mini-split market in the first half of 2019 is estimated to have increased by 16.7%. In the United States, mini-split sales exceeded 1 million units, and recognition in the industry became high.
Unitary
According to data from AHRI, year-to-date shipments in the first half of 2019 of unitary air conditioners decreased by 2.3%, to 2,978,788 units, down from 3,049,440 units shipped during the same period in 2018.
Window-type Units
The U.S. window-type RAC market scale in the first half of 2019 is estimated to have increased by 5.0%.
The U.S.-China trade friction will directly hit the North American window market. In the future, if the tariff on window units imported from China is increased to 25% and the price difference with mini-splits narrows, more consumers may buy mini-splits.

4. Southeast Asia
This year, summer arrived late in Southeast Asia too. Early June, it became hot at last and RAC inventory decreased while demand increased. The Southeast Asian RAC market in the first half of 2019 is estimated to have increased by 7.3%. Among VRFs, sales of mini-VRFs tend to increase.

5. India
This year, the weather in India was hot in general, and droughts occurred. For example, in Delhi, there have been frequent days when outdoor temperatures have exceeded 30℃ from mid March then over 40℃ from April. The Indian market did not show as much growth as expected over the last few years. However, due to the heat wave, RAC demand in the first half of this year is expected to increase significantly by 15.1%.

6. China
In China’s RAC industry in the first half of 2019, heavy inventory, price wars, and e-commerce were key issues.  Demand for air conditioners dropped due to the economic downturn caused by the U.S.-China trade friction and bad weather. In general, RAC sales started late this year in China and suffered a remarkable decline in the first half of 2019. JARN estimated that China’s RAC demand in the first half of 2019 fell by 8.9%.
